BUFF SILKIES
About the Silkie
Silkies (bantams in North America) are a wonderfully unique breed in the poultry world! Their silk-like feathers (resembling fur) make them soft and quite popular. They are one of only a few breeds to have 5 toes on each foot, and have black skin. They also come in bearded and non-bearded, as well as Showgirls (Silkie with no neck feathers). They come in 7 colours recognized by the American Poultry Association and American Bantam Association, which includes White, Black, Blue, Buff, Splash, Gray and Partridge, but come in many other colours breeders are working on. Silkies compete in the Featherleg class at poultry shows.
Silkies are a calm, docile and gentle breed. They are most known for being "incubators", because of their tendencies toward being broody. Roosters also tend to be more docile in general and are usually quite good around the chicks that are raised. Because of their inclination to be broody, they are therefore not great layers, so many that own them do not own them for producing eggs. Eggs that are produced are a smaller egg, usually white, cream or a very light brown in colour - usually depending on the variety (colour).

* More or less than 5 toes * Absence of beard or muffs * Shanks not feathered down outer sides * Single Comb * Plumage not truly silky Our Silkies We are working on producing a nice bird with excellent type, and then focusing on getting a nice even-coloured buff bird, with no smut (dark feathers, usually in tail or wings). The lines that we are working with are from great show lines from across the country. Buff Silkie Showgirls
